How to learn a language with FirePhrase
The FirePhrase Philosophy
Traditional apps often leave you stranded at the advanced beginner stage. You know the grammar basics, but you lack the sheer volume of vocabulary needed to understand native media or hold longer conversations.
FirePhrase is a Vocabulary Expansion Program designed to move you through the most common 1,000 words in your target language over a structured 3-month curriculum. This is a systematic program for serious learners who want the most efficient path to an advanced foundation.
You will get the most out of your packs if you:
- Have completed a beginner course, or studied the language at school, but find TV, radio and podcasts too difficult to follow
- Are motivated to spend 20 - 30 minutes per day expanding your vocabulary
Our recommended approach to learning a language from scratch:
1. Master the basics (month 1)
I can personally recommend the Michel Thomas method or SaySomethingIn
These methods are extremely effective at giving you confidence in the basics.
2. Expand your Vocabulary (months 2 - 5)
This is where FirePhrase is best deployed - move from upper beginner to intermediate, by rapidly expanding your vocabulary.
3. Practice with a native (months 3+)
After a month of FirePhrase, find an online instructor or language group and practise, practise, practise. Building your vocabulary whilst putting it into practice in parallel. Your mastery of the basics, combined with your huge vocabulary will put you streets ahead of anyone else.
You could look for:
- MeetUp groups focussed on your language
- Online tutors e.g. https://preply.com/
- Chambers of commerce in your native country, to network with people from other countries
4. Watch some TV
It's best to watch TV in your target language with subtitles turned also to your target language (NOT your native language) - this advice is based on research on second language acquisition.
